Tufte Television Studios

Lights on. Cameras rolling. Stories in motion. The Tufte Television Studios give students the space to create live broadcasts and multicamera productions in a professional television environment.

Located on the 8th floor of the Tufte Performance and Production Center at 10 Boylston Place, the Tufte Television Studios combine teaching spaces, studios, and control rooms that mirror professional broadcast operations. Students gain hands-on experience with industry-standard cameras, lighting, audio, and production systems while producing everything from live shows to studio-based projects. Interconnected with the Journalism Production Center, the Emerson Television Channels, the Bobbi Brown and Steven Plofker Gym, and the Cutler Majestic Theatre, the studios support productions and events across campus, including remote production from Rotch Field. The TV studios are fully HDR-equipped.

Di Bona Family Production Studio A

Built on the scale of professional television stations and production houses, the 40′ × 43′ Di Bona Family Television Studio gives students the tools to create ambitious productions. The space features a 14-foot lighting grid; computer-controlled lighting system; a Chromatte green-screen matting system; and a curved hard infinity wall, offering the versatility to support a wide range of studio projects.

Di Bona Control Room

The Di Bona Control Room recreates the environment found in professional broadcast facilities and supports emerging technologies in Ultra High Definition, High Dynamic Range, and high-frame-rate production. The control room includes:

  • Grass Valley Karrera 3 M/E switcher
  • Evertz router and multiviewer
  • Four HDR Grass Valley LDX 92 cameras with Fujinon servo lenses
  • Vinten ProPed pedestals with teleprompter systems
  • Ross XPression character generator
  • Tria clip server
  • Venice playback server
  • 5.1 surround monitoring
  • Access to Mimir, Emerson’s media asset management system

Di Bona Family Studio

Designed for flexible television production, the studio includes:

  • A full complement of television lighting instruments, including LED units
  • ETC ION lighting board system
  • Fully LED lighting system
  • Curved hard infinity wall (cyc)
  • Chroma green curtain
  • Chromatte curtain with LiteRing
  • Grip cart with production equipment and accessories
  • 10-foot Jimmy Jib system
  • Risers, flats, news desk, and other studio props

Audio A Suite

The Audio A Suite supports broadcast audio production and mixing and includes:

  • Solid State Logic System T S300-32 5.1 broadcast audio console
  • Instant Replay II audio storage system
  • Standard microphones and accessories, wireless and wired for a variety of projects, from talk to performance.
  • Genelec and Anchor audio monitors
  • Fisher Audio microphone boom with perambulator

 

Teaching Complex and Control Room B

Part classroom and part professional control room, the teaching complex gives students a place to learn, experiment, and produce in the same space. The facility supports lectures, demonstrations, screenings, critiques, and live productions while providing access to professional broadcast systems and equipment.
