Comedic Arts Applicant Requirements

The BFA in Comedic Arts is the only degree of its kind in the country—and admission is competitive. Your creative sample is a required part of your application and your chance to show us how you think, what makes you laugh, and what you bring to the world of comedy.

Show Us What You've Got

Submit one creative sample that showcases your strengths in writing, performance, or production. Writing samples should be between five and ten pages, and performance and production samples should be between three to five minutes long. Accepted formats are:

  • Stand-up
  • Sketch
  • Short film
  • Podcast
  • Webisode
  • Audio or sound clip
  • Screenplay or teleplay
  • Short story

No matter what you submit, please explain your role clearly—especially if you submit collaborative work.

What We’re Looking For

We don’t expect you to arrive as a polished, fully formed comedian. That’s what you’ll come to Emerson to become.

We’re looking for the beginnings of a distinct comedic voice—work that feels genuine, shows creative potential, and, most importantly, makes us laugh.

Before submitting, consider sharing your sample with a few people you trust. Ask what’s working, listen to their reactions, and use their feedback to make your strongest work even stronger.

How to Submit Your Creative Sample

After submitting your Common Application or Emerson Application, upload your creative sample through the Admission Portal.
