Learn the craft from every angle
Media Arts Production is for students who want to understand how media gets made—and make it themselves.
You’ll study the creative, technical, and critical sides of production, building skills across cinematography, editing, sound, screenwriting, studio production, animation, documentary, narrative film, and emerging media.
Your first two years give you a foundation in media history, criticism, theory, and production. From there, you’ll move into intermediate and advanced courses that help you sharpen your craft, explore different forms, and define the kind of maker you want to become.
In your junior and senior years, you’ll take more advanced courses, deepen your creative practice, and develop a distinct artistic perspective. You can apply to spend a semester at Emerson Los Angeles (ELA), studying and networking with entertainment industry professionals. By the time you graduate, you’ll have a body of work, industry connections, and experience collaborating across the many roles that bring media projects to life.
Learn by Making
At Emerson, you dive into the work from day one. You’ll get access to the tools, spaces, people, and opportunities that help media move from idea to execution—from studios and equipment resources to student productions, campus media, festivals, internships, and creative communities across Emerson and Boston. However you want to work, you’ll have room to test your ideas, build your skills, find your collaborators, and keep making.
The Paramount Sound Stage
Work in a professional-grade production studio from your first semester. On the Paramount Sound Stage, students shoot projects alongside actors, designers, sound engineers, and crew members.
They use equipment and workflows that mirror real sets. This is a working studio built for the Emerson community: hands-on and ready for ambitious student work.
Find your crew
Media production is collaborative by nature. At Emerson, you’ll find classmates, crews, campus organizations, and creative communities that help you make more work—and make the work better.
On campus, students produce and screen projects through organizations and festivals including Frames Per Second, Women in Motion, Emerson Film Festival, and It’s All True Documentary Film Festival. You can also build experience through roles with Media Technologies and Production, including the Equipment Distribution Center and Emerson Productions.
Off campus, Boston gives you even more places to learn, watch, listen, intern, and create—with film festivals, theatres, television and radio stations, museums, galleries, and a creative community just beyond Emerson’s doors.
Make Your Mark in Los Angeles
Emerson College’s state-of-the-art Los Angeles campus on Sunset Boulevard serves as our home on the West Coast.
Undergraduate students spend a full fall or spring semester taking classes in the heart of Hollywood and participating in a semester-long internship at a site related to their field of study. They start building a professional network through engagements with industry leaders both on and off campus, and alumni often return back to LA for jobs right out of graduation.
Learn from industry leaders
Our Media Arts Production faculty are working filmmakers, producers, and artists actively creating the work they teach.
