Lights, Camera, Action
Learn how to bring the stories you’ve always wanted to tell to life. Emerson College’s Film, Television, and Media Arts BFA is designed to prepare you for a career in the media arts, starting from ideation and carrying through to execution.The curriculum focuses upon immersive production experiences that give you time behind the camera, in the editing suite, on set, or elsewhere, and working alongside professionals and other creatives. You’ll explore every stage of the creative process and dive deeper into those that excite you most, including cinematography, directing, sound design, animation, producing, game design, photography, screenwriting, and emerging media.
This program offers intermediate and advanced-level production coursework, giving you more opportunities to develop your craft and take creative risks. You’ll work with professional-grade facilities, including the Paramount Sound Stage, Tufte Performance and Production Center, photography and analog film darkrooms, and the Emerging Media Lab with its virtual production studio. Small classes and collaborative productions mean you’ll learn from faculty who are working professionals while building lasting creative partnerships with classmates.
As your projects become more ambitious, so do your opportunities. Study abroad at Emerson’s Kasteel Well campus in the Netherlands, or gain industry experience through courses and internships at Emerson’s Los Angeles campus. By graduation, you’ll leave with an extensive portfolio of creative work, experience using professional tools, and a network of collaborators ready to help you take your next step into the media industry.
Create your work in professional-grade spaces and with the technology used across the media industry. Film in the Paramount Sound Stage, produce broadcasts in the Tufte Center TV studios, develop photography in the analog film darkrooms, and experiment with virtual production in the Emerging Media Lab. As you gain valuable hands-on experience you’ll become more comfortable with the tools, workflows, and collaborative environments that define today’s film, television, and media industries.
You’ll have the opportunity to work alongside students and faculty on a variety of film, television, and media projects. Emerson College is home to a number of organizations that let students create and produce their own film and TV works, including Frames Per Second, Common Collective, National Broadcasting Society, and more.

What are the benefits of the BFA in Media Arts Production?
Ample opportunities to explore applied areas for film, television, and media arts, such as cinematography, sound design, directing, drawing and animation, editing and post-production, emerging media, game design, photography, producing, and screenwriting.
How do the course requirements for the BFA in Film, Television and Media Arts differ from the BA in Media Arts Production?
The BFA requires 68 credits (compared to the BA 56 credits). The BFA also requires one upper-level liberal arts course (compared to the BA requirement of two upper-level liberal arts courses).
After enrolling in the BFA, if my plans change, will I be able to switch to the BA program?
Yes. Once you are on campus in the Fall, work with your academic advisor to ensure your program matches your interests and goals.
