Communication with a Purpose
Communication is at the core of how we learn, connect, work, and navigate the world around us. Emerson’s Communication Disorders BS program in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders will prepare you to understand how speech, language, and hearing develop, and how communication challenges can affect all types of people. The program blends science, communication, art, and human development to explore the challenges faced when speech, language, and hearing are impaired. You’ll gain a broad understanding of the social, psychological, and biological factors that shape and support human communication.
As you move through the program, you’ll study the development of speech and language, hearing sciences, psychology, and American Sign Language (ASL) among others. Alongside experienced faculty who are both practitioners and scholars, you’ll learn how evidence-based practice and compassionate care work together to improve people’s communication and daily lives.
Outside of the classroom, you’ll have the opportunity to observe clinical sessions at Emerson’s Robbins Speech, Language, and Hearing Center; collaborate on clinical cases; and gain hands-on experience through field experiences.. You’ll graduate with a strong scientific foundation, real-world experiences, professional connections, and the preparation needed to pursue careers in speech-language pathology and audiology or other areas.

The Communication Disorder BS exposes students to the Speech-Language Pathology field and to the process of helping individuals and families through a scientific, research-based, and culturally sensitive person-centered approach.
The Robbins Speech, Language, and Hearing Center provides clients and their families a place to work through communication disorders and challenges. Undergraduate students are able to collaborate on clinical cases, and observe the evaluation and treatment of clients.
